Domaine Jean Jacques Morel
Saint-Aubin, Côte de Beaune
2015 Puligny-Montrachet
Sourced from a sloped parcel near Blagny, with the oldest vines being 65-70 years old. Deeply penetrating and pure. There are earthy notes and spicy minerality lifting the bouquet from the onset. There are also aromas of lemon curd, overall offering tons of purity and energy. The palate is rich and loose, with creamy lightly pithy grapefruits. Utterly delicious and a more generous palate than the initial aromas suggested.
2015 Saint-Aubin Blanc ‘La Traversaine’
100% Chardonnay from a vineyard site on a steep slope that gradually flattens out. The aromas bring to mind bright straw notes, alongside creamy milky yellow citrus, pear and stone fruits all accompanied with a lovely deep warm spice. The palate is similarly layered with rich creamy notes, led by yellow peach syrup lassie with hints of mango and exotic fruits. Despite of the fruity sweetness, it is still intensely mineral with amazing balance, poise and savouriness.
2017 Saint-Aubin Blanc 1er Cru
100% Chardonnay. Aromas of lime cordial amid creamy oak spices and cream greet the nose. The palate follows through with similar lines of sweet lime acidity, oak spices and fresh clotted cream. This is a lively, tension-filled beast with nervous energy. Bright in its complexity and depth of flavour.
Due to low yields the two Premier Crus – Les Combes and La Chateniere – were blended together. Deep golden straw. This delicious natural white Burgundy offers aromas of spice, dried cream and sweet lime and yellow peach. A very relaxed palate thanks to the low sulphur addition, it slides seamlessly along the palate as the concentrated flavours unfurl yielding sweet Meyer lemon, lime pith and clementine. Acidity is fairly soft for the vintage with additional structure added by the fine chalky tannins. Very persistent lingering minerality.
2016 Saint-Aubin Rouge ‘Le Ban’
Opens with savoury earthy smells, like damp forest floor in Europe after rain. Aromas of Senegal roses, cooked redcurrant fruit and a little barbeque smoke. The juicy palate is incredibly concentrated with cooked redcurrant and strawberries, sweet and juicy. A gentle brush of superfine tannins develop working in harmony with the cleansing, fruit-driven acidity.
2014 Saint-Aubin Rouge ‘Les Frionnes’ 1er Cru
One of the last vintages of this cuvee available, as the vineyard was sold in 2015. And what a shame! A brilliant ruby coloured wine with aromas of cured meats, wood smoke and star-anise. Dried cranberry, goji berry, sweet red cherries and plums – there is serious complexity here! At first taste it is generous with juicy red fruits but then moves to a more subtle combination with flint, white smoke, red florals and an acidity that delicately trips across the tongue. Undertones of tannin and dark forest floor, make this super smooth. Flavours linger long after the finish.
