Domaine Berthet-Bondet
Château Chalon, Jura
NV Cremant du Jura 'Cave des Nieces'
Full-bodied, rich and cut with the region's signature saline kick. A slightly wild, yet beautifully composed sparkling wine that is a must if you're looking for a little something different from your bubbles.
2020 Côtes du Jura Rouge ‘Trio’
Trousseau (60%), Poulsard (30%) and Pinot Noir (10%). From younger vines on limestone and Trias marls, this is typically light, fragrant and fresh thanks to the short 1 week maceration and stainless tank aging. Expect red berry fruits – raspberry and strawberry – with rhubarb and some herbal, earthy and peppery tones. The palate is light and fresh, rivalling Burgundian neighbours for complexity but without the structure getting in the way of the sheer deliciousness. Was a favourite from previous shipments. 15ppm SO2
2019 Côtes du Jura Blanc ‘La Pouriere’
A single parcel of 40 year old Chardonnay on Trias marl. Direct pressed and run to barrels for fermentation and aging on lees for 10 months. A tiny 5% new oak. Classic yellow apple and pear with citrus, grilled nuts/almond meal and a light spice dusting from the barrels. This is a classic Burgundian style differentiated by the higher toned mineral notes and juicy acidity of the Jura.
2020 Côtes du Jura Blanc ‘Savagnier’
The other ‘topped up’ white is the Côtes du Jura Blanc ‘Savagnier’, in this case the wine is kept exclusively in tank. A pure expression of Savagnin without the influence of oak or oxidation. From the lieu-dit ‘Savagnier, located south of Chateau-Chalon in the village of Lavigny. Here the variety’s favoured blue marl coaxes a pure expression. Ripe citrus/lime dominates with exotic orchard and tropical notes, electric minerality and the hallmark saltiness. A reference for this variety.
2018 Côtes du Jura Blanc ‘Tradition’
A blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Savagnin from 30 year old vines on gravels and marls. Aged two years sous voile this is, as the name suggests, the classic oxidative Jura expression and the first window in the wonder of Berthet-Bondet’s sous voile range. Expect a complex range spanning very ripe white fruits through to roasted nuts with aged Comté, chicken stock and pithy old fruits becoming more pronounced with age but all wines should have extraordinary length with fine-boned acidity. Jean says this will age comfortably for 10 years and up to 20+ in the best vintages. Keep an eye out for our museum offer in the coming days! This pairs beautifully with smoked fish, roasted chicken and white meats and of course hard cheeses like Comté and Swiss styles.
2014 Château-Chalon
One of the most iconic and revered of all French wines and one of the most particular. It is the undisputed king of the Vin Jaune (yellow wine) style. The Jura’s Grand Cru. Of all the Vin Jaune we tried nothing came close to the harmonious style at Berthet-Bondet for its superb balance of off the scale complexity matched with freshness and the elegance of more delicate white wines. Expect wax, fresh nuts, dried corn, hard cheese, brininess and powerful citrusy acid structures in younger examples. For us it strikes the perfect balance of oxidative complexity from aging with freshness preserved thanks to intense minerality. The flagship wine.
