Blind corner

Margaret River, WA

Following a trip around Europe hunting out wine regions and surf breaks in a van; Ben and Naomi Gould established Blind Corner in 2005. They bought a small vineyard in Wilyabrup, Margaret River and began the vineyard’s conversion to biodynamics. Although they had worked in the vines and wineries of the area for many years, their passion for all things natural was sparked by a visit to biodynamic advocate, Nicolas Joly’s vineyard La Coulée de Serrant in Savennières, Loire Valley. The Gould mantra is to make wines that express their unique terroir, capture vintage variation and essentially trap the essence of the vineyard in bottle. 10 years after buying their original vineyard, with the help of some crowd-funding, they were able to buy another vineyard in Quindalup, Yallingup sub-region. Today the focus is on the Quindalup vineyard, which is certified biodynamic and organic. Vines are hand tended and dry-grown following biodynamic practices across the two vineyards. All grapes are handpicked and taken to the winery: home to an old basket press, natural yeasts and a concrete egg called Boonie. Here a portion of the fruit is air-dried Amarone style before fermentation, some of the grapes are foot stomped, others fermented in barrel and Boonie is used for skin contact both during and after fermentation. Whether introducing bees and chooks to the vineyards or experimenting with techniques learned from vignerons across the globe, Blind Corner is ever evolving in their approach to producing great value wines. “A new vanguard for Australian wine”, Mike Bennie.
